Bloomberg News has identified six key “restraint points,” important shortcuts, according to Clarkson Research Services Ltd. a division of the world’s largest shipbroker:
Bab el-Mandeb (“Gate of Tears”):
? The Houthis launched a series of attacks on ships, causing most of the container lines to decide to leave around Africa.
Strait of Malacca:
? Greater crowding of ships increases the risk of passing (collisions, pirates)
? Volcanic activity is influential.
Strait of Hormuz:
? Ships are vulnerable due to the shallow depth of the strait and proximity to aggressive countries.
Danish Straits:
? The waters are relatively shallow, so it is recommended that experienced local pilots guide vessels through this area.
Turkish Straits:
? Hindered by fog and sometimes strong currents.
? Forest fires force closure of the strait.
Panama Canal:
? Dry weather lowers the water level. This limits the number of vessels that can pass.
